Proposals to amend the Kuwaiti election law
Kuwait, Politics, 6/25/2001

Several Kuwaiti members of parliament had proposed a law provides for amending the election law article so as the Kuwaiti woman to be given her political right, including her right for nomination to election, and to voting for the nation's council ( parliament), which the already enacted law prohibits her from.

The persons who submitted the proposal said that article 35 of the enforced law states that each male citizen who is 21 year old has the right to vote. This very text prohibits the woman from her right to elect and therefore her right to be nominated for the nation's council ( parliament) and also the current law prohibits the woman from her right to assume the post of the cabinet minister.

The parliamentarians said that that the political participation of women is a back-bone for practicing democracy and is considered one of the indicators to political maturity which backs the country's stability.
