Syria: The first Economic paper released
Syria, Politics, 6/25/2001

The first private al-Iqtisadeyah paper was issued in Damascus to be the first Syrian economic paper of this sort to be licensed since several years and to join the satirical daily Addoumari , so far the first privately licensed weekly in the country.

The al-Iqtisadeyah was issued with 16- middle size papers and had in its first issues several numbers of advertisement. A matter which indicates that the private sector encourages the step taken by the private sector which permits this first initiative after decades of the monopoly of the mass media.

The chief editor of al-Iqtisadeyah, journalist Waddah Abd Rabbu considered his first specialized paper which is issued " outside the circle of the government's public sector" is a " serious attempt to greatly contribute in the overall development taking place in Syria," adding in the paper's editorial that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad: "Has given the objective of development on top of his priorities." Abd Rabbu indicated that the paper intends to take part in this development on a " solid ground of three decades old."

Abd Rabbu explained that his paper is open to the other's view but the ones who comes from inside the regime considering that the other's view who criticizes the " government's performance " but that without opening the door for people like Arif Dalila and Riad Seif, stressing that his paper will not be "pro nor against."

Meantime, news reports in Damascus said that the Syrian leadership is preparing to offer a new licensing for a specialized paper in administrative affairs specialized in administrative issues to be released very soon while number of applications to licensing papers at the ministry of information reached 40, and this to wait for approving as new printing law instead of the current one which dates back to the year 1949.
