UN discusses preventing armed disputes
Regional, Politics, 6/24/2001

Egypt participated in the UN session held late Thursday on means of playing more effective roles in preventing armed disputes. Egypt's Chief Delegate at the UN Ambassador Ahmed Abu El-Gheit said Egypt made a statement, in which he voiced support for the recommendations included in the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's report in this respect.

Annan presented various proposals in order to help prevent armed disputes, such as submission of unofficial periodical reports on some volatile areas to the UN Security Council members to decide upon.

"Egypt agreed on these proposals as long as they would respect the sovereignty of all countries and ensure the agreement of the Council members," he added.

Abu El-Gheit said, besides Annan's proposals, the UN should take the initiative to secure protection of civilians under occupation as the case in the Palestinian territories, occupied Arab lands, areas where there is ethnic genocide and any other violations of international human law.

"UN chief recommendations included means of handling disputes before they erupt in order to curb the human and material losses," he added.

He pressed the international financing organizations, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, to consider the social dimensions in countries when they apply their programmes in order to prevent internal disputes.
