Moussa urges Washington to play fair mediator role
Regional-USA, Politics, 6/24/2001
Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Amr Moussa called on the United States to play the fair mediator role, otherwise all bids would lead to failure once again.
In an interview with the BBC Radio, Moussa said the US diplomacy is back again on the issue of peace in the region through the acceptance of the Mitchell report with all its recommendations, including a halt to settlement building, withdrawal and termination of the Israeli siege.
"The United States is also back through the framework presented by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director George Tenet when he came to the region to affirm that this security framework must have political legs to stand on," said Moussa.
He pointed out that the Egyptian-Jordanian plan had almost the same elements as the Mitchell report, though the Egyptian Jordanian paper spoke about a timetable.
Moussa said he discussed with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan and British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw the deteriorating situation between Israel and the Arabs.
