Powell calls on leaders of ME to help furthering the cause of peace
Regional-USA, Politics, 6/24/2001
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell Friday said he wants to protect the efforts of pushing peace in the Middle East forward in spite of the tension in the region.
CNN quoted Powell after his meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher as saying that the fragile Palestinian-Israeli ceasefire did not live up to aspirations.
But he believed that the leaders of the region would help him further the cause of peace and make an extra step next week during his visit.
Powell said the acts of violence saw a decline in the Mideast and were approaching aimed rates and that was the reason for going to the region to see for himself the condition in the region, talk to the leaders, and assess the situation.
The foreign minister termed the plan of CIA Director George Tenet along with the Mitchell Commission recommendations as decisive and significant steps for him to build upon.
Powell also described Palestinian-Israeli security meetings as positive and constructive, noting that his goal is to bridge the lukewarm period to trust-building measures.
