Moroccan journalists launch 4-million signature petition for children
Morocco, Culture, 6/22/2001
The 4-million petition for children called "Say yes to Children" was launched in Rabat on Thursday by the Moroccan press club, as part of preparations for next September's UN general assembly extraordinary session on children.
The operation, spearheaded by the Moroccan observatory of children rights (ONDE) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), expects to collect four million signatures in a petition circulated to promote children's rights.
The petition will be circulated in various institutions, the parliament, administrations, private companies, associations and non-governmental organizations. Signatories will select three priorities among a set of issues: not to exclude any child, give priority to children, take care of children, fight HIV/AIDS, end children exploitation, listen to children, educate all children, protect children against war, protect land for children, fight poverty and invest in children.
A network of journalists specialized in children issues was also set up to inform the public on the situation of children and their needs in matters of health, education, housing and entertainment.
