Al-Shara discusses with Moratinos the situation in the region, strengthening Syrian- European relations
Syria-European Union, Politics, 6/22/2001

The Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara on Thursday received the EU special envoy on the Middle East Mr. Angle Moratinos and members of the accompanying delegation.

Present at the meeting were the deputy foreign minister Mrs. Seba Nasser and the director of the west Europe department at the foreign ministry Muhammad al-Hamwi.

The two sides discussed developments of conditions in the region, and Syrian- European relations. Stress was laid on the importance of strengthening these relations in all fields.

Following the meeting Moratinos told journalists gathered at the premises of the foreign ministry that his meeting with al-Shara was very fruitful.

He added:" we have discussed the current situation in the Middle East and basically the situation between Israel and the Palestinians. I have informed al-Shara about the intensive efforts exerted by the EU in order to get out of this situation and the resumption of peace talks between the two sides."

Moratinos expressed his hope that the visit of the US secretary of state Colin Powell and the higher coordinator of the foreign policy at the EU Javier Solana today ( Friday) to the region will contribute to reaching the possibility to integrate all efforts in order to resume talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
