Belgium and Sharon's trial
Israel-Belgium, Politics, 6/22/2001
Well-informed sources in Brussels asked not to be identified told the Belgian daily "Le Soir" that the Belgian government will spare no efforts to amend and even cancel the law which authorizes Belgian courts to consider crimes and mass- annihilation acts and anti- humanity crimes, stressing that the case of the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon in Sabra and Shatilla massacres in the year 1982 will not be brought before the Belgian courts.
On the other hand, the Israeli radio has quoted Israeli sources as saying that Brussels, simply will stay outside the court concerning Israel in case judicial measures will continue against Sharon.
The radio said that the concern of the Belgian government over the deterioration of relations with Israel is attributed, before anything else, to the firm warning stated by the Israeli foreign minister Shemon Peres to the Belgian officials in this matter.
