Premier chairs meeting on Moroccan expatriates' holidays home
Morocco, Local, 6/21/2001
Morocco's premier, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, chaired on Tuesday a meeting of the commission in charge of supervising the travel and stay conditions of Moroccan expatriates who spend their holidays in Morocco.
The meeting reviewed a program designed as a reference for all departments involved in the operation to ensure good travel and stay conditions for Moroccan expatriates and improve the efficiency of services extended to them.
The program, described by Youssoufi as the result of efforts by all concerned departments, deals with the travel, transit and safety of the Moroccan community abroad and easing all administrative procedures.
Meanwhile, Europa Press news agency reports that a total of 19,298 Moroccans and 3,462 cars have crossed the Gibraltar strait on their way to Morocco in no more than two days, between June 15 and 17. Most of the passengers used the port of Algesiras, followed by Almeria and Malaga. The three Spanish ports and Tangiers are serviced by 110 daily boat shuttles.
The Spanish home minister expects 2.4 million Moroccans and 500,000 vehicles to cross the southern ports on their way from work place in Europe to Morocco. The figures mark a 9 to 10% increase compared to summer 2000.
The Spanish government has allocated 1.2 billion Pesetas to the operation supervised by 2,500 persons posted in the southern ports.
