Moroccan NGO forces Polisario to cancel activities in Las Palmas
Morocco, Politics, 6/19/2001

The Moroccan Sahara Association (ASM) has forced the separatist Polisario movement to cancel a series of activities it was projecting to hold Sunday in Las Palmas, Canary Islands.

The polisario was planning to take the opportunity of the commemoration of the demise of the Moroccan Sahrawi leader, the late Mohamed Bassiri, to stage a propaganda campaign in the Canary Islands.

A Moroccan delegation including relatives of the late Bassiri, civil society activists and journalists unveiled the separatists' allegations, a member of the Moroccan NGO, Reda Taouajni, told MAP bureau in Madrid in a telephone talk.

The Canary Islands inhabitants have thus been informed about the separatists' fallacious theses that distort the history of the Moroccan southern provinces and the ties binding the inhabitants of these provinces with the kingdom of Morocco, Taouajni said, adding that under the Moroccan NGO pressures, "the mercenaries gang was forced to cancel all its activities in the Canary Islands."
