Six policemen wounded in Copts demonstrations in Egypt
Egypt, Local, 6/19/2001
Six policemen were wounded in a demonstration for thousands of Christian Copts during their protest on Sunday in Cairo over a news report in the Egyptian weekly al-Nabaa claiming that a Coptic monk had sexual relations with a married woman.
News reports in Cairo said that between 3000 to 4,000 Copts had gathered in a cathedral for the Orthodox Copts in Cairo and many of them confronted with the security men forces when they tried to take the streets.
The news reports explained that six members of the police including three officers were wounded after their confrontation with the demonstrators, noting that the policemen could disperse the demonstrators after Pope Shenouda III, the patriarch of the Orthodox Copt eased down the situation as he arrived at the site of the confrontation.
However, al-Nabaa magazine published a report illustrated by a picture for a bearded man introduced as a monk in a ( sexual) position with a woman. The police stressed that all copies of the magazine were confiscated at the order of the court.
