Jordanian memo to the UN in support of Iraq
Jordan-Iraq, Politics, 6/18/2001
On Saturday evening Jordan has urged the UN Security Council not to agree a new American- British plan to amend the sanctions imposed on Iraq, warning the drastic results of these sanctions on its economy.
News reports quoted the Jordanian prime minister Ali Abu al-Ragheb as saying in a memorandum he submitted to the UN secretary general Kofi Annan that the effect of the new sanctions on the performance of the economy will be great.
Abu al-Ragheb explained that the repeated calls in solidarity with Iraq are but a direct result of the regional tension in the ME, warning that these pressures will lead to adverse impact of the proposed sanctions on the Jordanian economy.
Worthy mentioning, the UN Security Council is trying to reach an agreement concerning the British- American plan before a final date set on the third of July, at a time when it is not clear whether Russia will use the veto to kill the proposed resolution or will abstain from voting.
The said plan tries to maintain, through a proposed resolution by the UN Security Council, to halt what it called the operations of smuggling oil to countries neighboring Iraq, of a value estimated at one billion USD every year, as well as to put this sum in a separate account instead of paying it to the Iraqi government directly.
