On the redeployment of the Syrian army in Lebanon
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 6/16/2001

Lebanese official and political sources have considered that the Lebanese- Syrian relations have started a new phase that is presumed to be read in a good way in considering the positive result of redeploying the Syrian army in Lebanon.

The London- based al-Hayat daily said in its Friday's issue that these sources saw in this Syrian step as making political selection and that certain forces might be embarrassed, especially as the political ball has returned back to its own court (ie away from Syria's corner). The Lebanese political sources also view the Syrian forces re-deployment in Lebanon as a test to the forces opposing Syria or the aggregations recently emerged, particularly " Qurnet Shahwan."

The political circles stressed that re-deployment came just after a short time of several political stations being Lebanese or Syrians, foremost being the preparedness of the Syrian President to visit France and Germany by the end of the current month and the positive impact of this step ( re-deployment) on the talks he will be holding; Lebanon's official preparedness to host the Phrancophony summit in October and the periodical Arab summit in March 2002; and pulling out the question of the Syrian presence in Lebanon from debate at the local and foreign levels and sending a serious signal on Syria's readiness to abide by the agreements signed with Lebanon and that Syria has no desire to stay in Lebanon in contrary to what have been rumored by certain Lebanese who doubt Syria's implementation of these agreements.
