Arab League calls for halting intervention in Sudan's affairs
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 6/15/2001

The Arab League (AL) on Thursday has called in conclusion of a meeting for its permanent representatives in the presence of the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael " all regional and international sides to abstain from interventions which will obstruct efforts aiming at achieving peace and national unity in Sudan."

In a statement, the AL renewed its call to the " need of responding to the calls advocated by the international community aiming at maintaining a full cease- fire in southern Sudan and the return back of all sides to negotiations and enabling the urgent humanitarian aids from having access to the damaged areas in the south."

The AL stressed " full solidarity with sisterly Sudan in the conditions it has been facing" and called " all sides concerned to cooperate with the exerted efforts in the framework of the Egyptian- Libyan initiative which was accepted by the Sudanese forces and backed by the Arab League, the African Unity Organization and IGAD's initiative." The AL also urged the Arab League member states, and Arab NGO's to carry out their duties in providing support and humanitarian aids to the Sudanese refugees and displaced peoples."

The secretary general of the Arab League AL Amre Mousa said during his meeting with Ismael and the AL permanent representatives that "the return back of military acts to certain area in Sudan is regrettable and a setback for the peace process sponsored by the joint Libyan- Egyptian initiative and also the IGAD initiative."
