Regional-Israel, Politics, 6/15/2001

The Israeli authorities on Thursday prevented a delegation from South Africa from heading to Jerusalem to visit al-Aqsa Mosque, according to sources in Amman.

Members in the delegation explained that a group of 32 figures from South Africa with the majority of them Muslims were among 102 figures headed this week to visit Iraq in a humanitarian and solidarity mission and returned on Wednesday to Amman.

One member of the group, Abu baker Dowaji, who is also a member of south Africa committee to work for the sake of Iraq ( non- governmental) said that when the 32 figures arrived at the Palestinian side of King Hussein bridge which links Jordan to the West Bank, which is controlled by Israel, in their way to Jerusalem, the Israeli authorities asked them to wait and investigated them on the objective of their visit.
