Syria: a split in the Arab Socialists movement
Syria, Politics, 6/14/2001

The Arab Socialists movement in Syria has been exposed to a third split in its history after the leading figure in the movement Ahmad al-Ahmad announced that he does not recognize the movement's new leadership and he has already established a new political office and called for a general conference to the movement and the end of the current month was set as a date.

Worthy mentioning that al-Ahmad who appointed himself as provisional secretary general for the movement. He is a member at the Syrian People's Assembly and occupies the post of the Assembly's secretary general.

On reasons behind his non- recognition of the movement's provisional new secretary general Mustafa Hamdoun despite the fact he competed with him for the post of the provisional secretary general after the death of the foundation of the movement Abdul Ghani Qanout, al-Ahmad said that "the elections which were held two months earlier were mostly counterfeited and that Hamdoun had two voices more those he had won, noting that Hamdoun got 25 voices and I got 23 votes out of the votes of the political votes which contributed to the elections process. But four votes of the political bureau votes came by illegal authorization from members of the bureau who did not attend the elections."

When he was asked that he himself got one or two votes by authorization, including the vote of minister Nuhad Mushantat, who is also member of the movement's political bureau and he did not attend the elections, al-Ahmad said: "the votes are legal and the submitted authorization is also legal."
