Sudan: cabinet reshuffle, Egypt, Libya are committed to Sudan's integrity
Sudan, Politics, 6/14/2001

Egypt and Libya have expressed their solidarity with Sudan in the conditions it has been facing, as it seemed that the rebels in South Sudan have become of a real danger to oil resources. And this matter made Khartoum retreat from its decision to use its air force against them ( the rebels).

Meantime, the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has made a limited ministerial reshuffle that covered three ministerial posts. He appointed the minister of information Ghazi Salah eddine al-Atabani as a ministerial advisor for peace affairs and al-Atabani was succeeded by Mahdi Ibrahim. Qutbi al-Mahdi was appointed as a political advisor for the Sudanese presidency.

Al-Atabani was a minister of information whereas Ibrahim was the advisor for the president for political affairs after he had worked as Sudan's ambassador in Washington before he was summoned in 1998 in protest of the American air bombardment to the medicine factory in al-Khartoum.

On the other hand, the secretary general for the provisional council for peace Hamad Abdul karim was killed in the Sudanese southern province Kardavan on Monday when he run over a landmine.

The Sudanese daily Alwan ( colors) said that Abdul Karim was leading a convey transporting humanitarian aids to the displaced in the southern province of Kardavan where the Sudanese southern rebels are controlling certain mountainous areas.

Meanwhile, both Libya and Egypt condemned " every thing that threatens the security and safety of the Sudanese territorial integrity," in remarks to the recent military escalation in the south.

In a statement released in Tripoli after the conclusion of a tripartite Egyptian, Sudanese and Libyan meeting in Tripoli, the two countries expressed their full solidarity with Sudan in the conditions facing it. Libya and Egypt expressed " their full support to the efforts made by the Sudanese government to reach the peaceful comprehensive solution." They called for the need of speed towards revitalizing the Egyptian- Libyan initiative, concerning Sudan.

On Monday, the Sudanese government announced that its armed forces "will resume air raids" against the south " in defense of herself before the repeated aggressions hatched by the rebells in the south. This was expressed in a statement released by the Sudanese foreign ministry.
