Yemeni minister resigns on differences over local councils
Yemen, Politics, 6/14/2001

The Yemeni minister of local administration on Tuesday withdrew from a governmental meeting in protest of the limited authorities offered to the local councils which were elected February this year.

A government official said that Sadeq Amin Abu Raas, member of the ruling national congress party, cried during a governmental meeting chaired by the prime minister Abdul Qader Bajmal " I resign." The Yemeni official added that Abu Raas " withdrew from the meeting before it ended in protest of the authorities' offer to the local councils which the minister calls for their increase."

On the other hand, the Yemeni minister of the Interior Rashad al-Oleimi said that the threats the American embassy in Sanaa had received were " untrue and from unidentified elements," considering that there is no serious justification to the measure taken to close the American consulate.
