Morocco-Czech Republic, Economics, 6/13/2001

Czech finance minister, Jiri Rusnok, met in Rabat Tuesday Moroccan premier, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, who stressed Morocco's keenness to develop relations with East European countries, candidates to become members of the European Union.

The Czech official underlined the importance of the two agreements signed on Monday on investments protection and promotion and non-double taxation.

With the two agreements concluded, Morocco and the east European country have set up the appropriate legal frame for economic operators to develop and consolidate business and partnership ties between the two countries.

Morocco suffers a deficit in its trade with the Czech republic as the coverage rate stood in 2000 at only 8.5%, against 10.1% a year before.

Morocco's imports from the east European country were worth 136.3 million DH in 2000 (US$ 12.39 mln) against 164.6 million in 1999 (US$14.96 mln). Exports also regressed by 30% from 16.6 million DH (US$1.5 mln) to 11.6 million DH (US$ 1.05 mln).

Means to enhance bilateral cooperation were surveyed at another meeting held Monday between Rusnok and industry, trade, energy and mining minister, Mustapha Mansouri. The Moroccan official said there is a possibility for geology departments of the two countries to cooperate in important projects, as the Czech republic boasts a great expertise in this field.

He added rural electrification, oil prospecting and mining can also be promising fields for cooperation.
