Egyptian-Sudanese consultations are a sign of the depth of bilateral relations
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 6/12/2001

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher Monday said that the Egyptian-Sudanese consultations are a sign of the depth of bilateral relations.

These remarks came after a meeting with his Sudanese counterpart Moustafa Othman Ismail at the Foreign Ministry.

Maher is expected to complete his talks abroad the plane taking him with Ismail to Tripoli.

The talks, Maher said, will continue in the Libyan capital of Tripoli and in Cairo again after the return of the two Foreign Ministers.

"The consultations, to go on for coming three days, mirror the depth of Egyptian-Sudanese relations," he said.

Ismail, who met with Maher for the first time since the latters' assumption of the foreign relations portfolio, said he is looking forward to work with Maher and benefit from his long expertise to forge ahead bilateral relations and common goals.

"The meeting (of today) was a good opportunity to exchange opinions with Ahmed Maher in light of the upcoming meeting of the joint ministerial committee late this month in Khartoum," he said.

The Sudanese Minister said that they would look into identifying a joint African-Arab space area within the content of identifying an African space area.

The Tripoli meeting will also cover ways of activating the joint Egyptian-Libyan peace plan on Sudan.

"Sudan is an Arab-African country and not only African," Ismail commented over the US reports considering Sudan an African and not Middle Eastern country.

"Sudan is an Arab country belonging to the Arab, Middle East and African group. It is an important bridge for Afro-Arab cooperation," he said.

Queried about the US support for the separatists in South Sudan, the Sudanese foreign minister said such support is a clear evidence of the bias of the Americans towards one side of the conflict.

"I hope the American Administration will backtrack on such positions and be neutral rather than siding with one party against the other to be able to contribute in solving the war problems in the south," he noted.
