Arab countries still committed to peace as strategic option
Regional-European Union, Politics, 6/11/2001
Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa Monday received European Union Mideast peace envoy Miguel Moratinos who briefed him on efforts exerted by the EU to reduce tension in the Palestinian territories.
Emerging from the meeting, Moratinos said the EU is keen on coordinating stances with the Arab League as regards its political moves in the Mideast region.
The EU believes that the Arab League plays an important role in the critical stage the Mideast is currently going through, he added.
He noted that Moussa stressed to him the Arab states' commitment to peace as a strategic option, with emphasis on the importance that peace would help realise the legitimate Arab rights.
The EU and Arab League will continue coordination, especially in the coming week which would witness intensified political moves aiming at cementing the cease-fire and working for resuming the peacemaking, Moratinos said.
He explained that the EU is exerting strenuous efforts together with the U.S. in order to reach a formula for political moves acceptable to both Palestinians and Israelis.
"The American-European summit, to be held on Thursday, will issue a joint communique on the Mideast situation" Moratinos said, reiterating the importance of efforts exerted in quest for peace in Mideast, including those of Russia and the United Nations.
On whether these diplomatic efforts include any tendency towards fulfilling the Palestinian demand for providing international protection to the Palestinian civilians, he said the current moves aim at providing protection to civilians on both sides.
