Saudi crown prince: the ME is on a barrel of dynamite
Saudi Arabia-Regional, Politics, 6/11/2001
The Saudi crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz has warned against the eruption of a new war in the Middle East. He held the Israeli prime minister responsible for the escalation of violence in the region.
In a statement to the German Daily Der Speigel issued on Saturday, the Saudi crown prince added: "we are all sitting on a barrel of dynamite that can be explode at any moment. And this war will not only hit the Israelis and the Arabs but also several areas in the world." Crown prince Abdullah on Sunday started a visit to Morocco in conclusion of a tour which covered Syrian, Germany and Sweden.
He added " the Israeli war machine is directed daily to unarmed people, the most they can do is to throw stones. Sharon's policy overcomes the future of Israel" The Saudi crown prince admitted that the Palestinians also carry out acts of violence including the suicide attack which resulted in killing 21 Israelis at the entrance of a disco in Tel Aviv in the 1st of June, stressing that this suicide operation by a Palestinian is because of the state of " repression and frustration" the Palestinians feel.
He said that the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat also cannot prevent the anger and rebellion acts of his citizens, only when " Israel gives up its cancerous expansion of its settlements in the Palestinian territories."
He said that Sharon's policy destroys the future of Israel and welcomed the return back of the US to take part in the peace efforts in the region, noting that Europe has also to extend the helping hand in this mediation.
He explained that the European Union owns the strategic, moral and political weight in order to carry out this task, adding that Germany, for its part, should not prevent the role of mediation despite its historically strong relations with Israel.
However, the visit of the Saudi crown prince to Morocco is considered the first since King Muhammad 6th assumed power in July 1999, in succession of his father King Hassan II.
Moroccan official sources said that the talks between the Saudi crown prince and the Moroccan King will deal with current conditions in the Middle East and the aggressions against the Palestinians by the israeli occupation forces.
