Egypt, Britain share identical viewpoints regarding ME peace process
Egypt-UK, Politics, 6/9/2001
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher Thursday received a message from British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Robin Cook.
British Ambassador in Cairo Graham Boyce handed over the message to Maher during their meeting in Cairo earlier on Thursday.
Emerging from the meeting, Boyce said that the message dealt with the latest developments in the Middle East region.
"We are looking forward to consolidating relations with Egypt, especially as regards implementation of the Mitchell Commission report," he said.
The Egyptian and British viewpoints are identical concerning the steps that should be taken in order to ease tension in Mideast, he said, adding that there should be a clear plan for working on stopping violence and resuming the peace process.
Boyce explained that the aim behind the message was to inform the Egyptian side on the British viewpoint regarding regional development.
"Britain understands well the role played by President Hosni Mubarak in a bid to water down the situation and remove tensions," he added.
"Britain supports the Egyptian-Jordanian initiative and there is coordination between them in this respect until now," he said.
