Over eight billion cubic meters stored in Moroccan dams
Morocco, Agriculture, 6/9/2001
Over eight billion cubic meters were stored in Moroccan dams up to last May 30, representing 58.2% of their capacity, said the equipment ministry.
The volume of stored water exceeds by two billion cubic meters the level reached as at May 2000. However, there is a disparity between regions as 75% of the volume is stored in five large dams.
With the exception of the Al Massira dam which saw its water level decrease to 29.8% of capacity from 46.2% last year, water levels in the four other dams are important.
Morocco has 97 operational big dams, totaling a storage capacity of some 15 billion cubic meters.
The figures were released during a dinner-debate held on Friday by the Association of Maghreb Arabe Presse Journalists. (AJMAP).
