Iraqi trade minister in Damascus

The Iraqi minister of Trade Muhammad Mahdi Saleh arrived in Damascus on Friday evening. He was welcomed at Damascus airport by the minister of the economy and foreign trade Muhammad al-Imadi, the minister of supply and internal trade, officials concerned in the economic sector and the chairman of the Iraqi interests office in Damascus.

In an arrival statement to SANA the Iraqi minister stressed that the relations between Syria and Iraq have been developed rapidly towards achieving common economic, social and political objectives serving the interests of the two countries, noting the importance of the decision taken between Iraq and Syria to establish a free trade zone as a nucleus for the common Arab market.

He hoped that the four- member free Arab trade zone signed on Thursday between Syria, Egypt, Iraq and Libya in the context of the meeting of the Arab economic unity council to include all Arab states in order to maintain the common Arab market and Arab economic unity.

He said he will discuss with the Syrian officials bilateral issues, noting that on Thursday several new agreements were signed with the Syrian minister of supply Osama Maa al- Barid in Baghdad.

He described the " smart sanctions" proposal called upon by the US and Britain as a colonialist project aiming at preventing Iraq from investing its money and resources freely for the prosperity of the Iraqi people. He stressed Iraq's rejection to deal with this project because its objective is to keep Iraq tightened with obstructed potentials.
