The UN, Russia and Iraq
Iraq-Russia, Politics, 6/9/2001

Russia on Thursday at the UN expressed its doubts on the outcome of British initiative to propose an amended text for the draft project that it had previously submitted to the UN Security Council concerning the sanctions imposed on Iraq.

News reports quoted Sergy Lavrov, the Russian representative at the UN as saying to the press that the draft project which is supported by the UN, which was slightly amended by France, did not deal with the main issues on ways how the UN Security Council will suspend the sanctions imposed on Iraq since a decade.

Lavrov said that the resolution of December 1999 provided to impose sanctions on Iraq, that set preconditions that Iraq has to abide by to suspend these sanctions, suffers great gaps. A matter which obstructs reaching a solution.

However, it is still not clear, whether Russia will try to amend the British- American plan or will give it up ultimately.
