Moroccan- Ivoirian meetings in Rabat
Morocco-Cote d'Ivoire, Politics, 6/8/2001

Morocco's minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, reviewed in Rabat Thursday with Cote d'Ivoire peer, Abou Drahamane Sangare means to give a new impetus to cooperation between the two African countries.

Benaissa told MAP he surveyed with Sangare bilateral cooperation as well as the need to consolidate ties at all levels and foster political consultation.

He added preparations for the joint commission to meet next October were also on the agenda, together with Euro-African cooperation, in the perspective of the Euro-Africa summit slated in 2002 in Lisbon.

Talks also covered the situation of Moroccans living in Cote d'Ivoire and the training of Ivoirian executives in Morocco.

This Friday, Sangare met economy, finance, privatization and tourism minister, Fathallah Oualalou, who stressed the need to upgrade bilateral trade, as part of the south-south cooperation. In 1998, Cote d'Ivoire's imports from Morocco totaled 286 million DH (about $26 million) against 296 million DH ($ 27 million) in exports.

The head of Cote d'Ivoire's diplomacy is leading a ministerial delegation who started on Wednesday a three-day visit to Morocco.

Meanwhile, Ivoirian defense and civil protection minister, Moise Lida Kouassi, met with Morocco's minister of the interior, Ahmed El Midaoui.

The two officials discussed cooperation in various fields falling in the scope of their competence and renewed readiness to consolidate ties.
