Evolution of Sahara issue discussed with UN executive in Geneva

The evolution of the Sahara issue was surveyed at a meeting in Geneva Wednesday between Moroccan minister of employment, Abbas El Fassi, and Director General of the U.N office in Geneva, Vladimir Petrovsky.
During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 89th international labor conference, El Fassi--also minister of vocational training, social development and solidarity-surveyed the major phases having marked the evolution of the Sahara issue. He also described the political and social evolution in Morocco, characterized by political alternation in power and democratic transition under the wise leadership of king Mohammed VI.
The Moroccan official explained the reforms initiated by the country in the legislative, fiscal and educational fields and the efforts made to struggle against unemployment and corruption to prepare Morocco take up the challenges of globalization and economic and social development.
Petrovsky hailed as important the progress scored by Morocco in building up a democratic society and said Morocco is today an example that should be followed by a number of countries that are facing up the globalization challenge.
El Fassi-Petrovsky talks also covered Morocco's outstanding contribution to UN peace keeping operations throughout the world (Somalia, RD Congo.) and the Moroccan official voiced Morocco's determination to carry on this cooperation and to continue backing to the UN peace keeping and development operations.
El Fassi also conferred with the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, on the reforms ushered in by Morocco in matters of the electoral code, the communal charter, the press code. reforms that are meant to consolidate the rule of the law and promote the respect of human rights.
