Amnesty International's activities will now cover companies' abuses as well
Regional, Culture, 6/7/2001
Chairman of Amnesty International executive committee, Colm O'Cocuanac, announced on Wednesday that the activities of the London-based association will also cover human rights abuses by companies worldwide.
The AI executive, who held a press conference in Rabat to present the organization's 2000 report, said Amnesty International will enlarge the scope of its action by encouraging the respect of human rights in economic circles and prompt multinational firms to shoulder their responsibilities.
He also noted that economic insecurity has caused internal conflicts that states could neither prevent nor solve and insisted it is high time governments took their responsibility regarding the growing influence of multinational companies.
AI's communication officer, Kamal Semmari, stressed that the Moroccan media has always supported human rights advocacy groups.
To a question on the organization's attitude toward the situation in the Middle East, he explained that since the start of the conflict in the region, AI's stance remained unchanged, being convinced that no peace is possible without the respect of human rights, including the right of Palestinian refugees to return home, a right that is guaranteed by international conventions and United Nations resolutions.
