Cairo, Amman stress keeness to promote relations
Jordan-Egypt, Politics, 6/6/2001

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak sent on Tuesday a message to King Abdullah II of Jordan on bilateral relations.

The message was handed by Prime Minister Atef Ebeid during his meeting with King Abdullah. The meeting, which was attended by Jordanian Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb, dealt with the situation in the Middle East.

The discussions dealt as well with current conditions in Palestinian territories and Egyptian-Jordanian coordination to end the suffering of the Palestinians on the basis of current initiatives represented in the Egyptian-Jordanian initiative and the Mitchell commission report.

King Abdullah stressed his keenness to promote the distinguished relations between Egypt and Jordan.

Abul Ragheb and Ebeid updated king Abdullah on the issues raised at the Egyptian-Jordanian higher committee meetings.

Meanwhile King Abdullah conferred Jordan's first-class order of merit on Ebeid and hosted a luncheon banquet in honor of the Egyptian premier. King Abdullah Tuesday stressed the distinguished relations between Egypt and Jordan and the desire of the two countries to strengthen these relations in all fields.

He described what was achieved during meetings of the Higher Egyptian-Jordanian Committee, which concluded its meetings in Amman Tuesday, as a step that translated this desire into a tangible reality.

A statement issued by the Jordanian Royal Cabinet after King Abdullah received Ebeid Tuesday lauded steps taken by Egypt and Jordan this year to activate economic cooperation and trade exchange and launch joint investments.

King Abdullah expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the two countries to build a strong economy to serve the interests and common Arab cooperation.

Egypt and Jordan Tuesday urged Israel to immediately stop brutal aggression against the Palestinians and the collective punishment policy.

This came in the final communique issued at the closing session of the Egyptian-Jordanian joint committee meetings held in Jordan under the co-chairmanship of Prime Minister Atef Ebeid and his Jordanian counterpart Ali Abul Ragheb.

The two states underlined the necessity that Israel should also stop the policy of destroying the Palestinian economy and property. The statement also urged Israel to return to the negotiating table on the basis of the international legitimacy resolutions particularly the UNSC resolutions 242 and 338 along with the land for peace principle.
