Israeli collective punishment resulted in devastating Palestinian economy and properties
Regional-Israel, Politics, 6/6/2001

Egypt and Jordan have called on Israel to stop its aggression on the Palestinians and to give up its policy of collective punishment which resulted in utter devastation to the Palestinian economy and properties.

Egypt's Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, who co-chaired the meeting with his Jordanian counterpart, delivered a message from President Hosni Mubarak to Jordan's King Abdullah dealing with an array of issues of mutual interest.

"Israel must resume talks on basis of the UN resolutions and the land-for-peace principle," said a communique issued at the close of the meeting of the Egyptian-Jordanian Joint Commission.

The communique exhorted the United Nations to put in place practical measures to protect the Palestinians from Israeli violence, indicating that the Egyptian-Jordanian peace proposal aimed at stopping hostilities and ending the blockade on Palestinians.

Egypt and Jordan reiterated their rejection of Israeli expansionism, the construction of more Jewish settlements and Judaisation of the holy city of Jerusalem.

They also emphasised the need to offer full support to Palestinians in accordance with the resolutions of the extraordinary Arab summit that took place in Cairo in October.

They also declared their utter support for the Iraqi people, indicating that sanctions on Iraq should be eventually lifted through dialogue between Baghdad and the UN.

They renewed their call to free the Middle East of all weapons of mass destruction and the importance for Israel to join the non-proliferation treaty and opening its nuclear facilities to international inspection.
