Cairo, Amman sign gas line agreement
Jordan-Egypt, Economics, 6/6/2001
Jordan and Egypt on Tuesday signed an agreement to erect a pipe line to transport the Egyptian natural gas to Jordan, in the first phase of a project to transport gas to Lebanon, Syria and Turkey.
The agreement was signed at a cost of USD 300 million in conclusion of a meeting lasted for two days for the Egyptian- Jordanian higher joint committee in Amman in order to increase cooperation between the two states.
The Jordanian prime minister Ali Abu al-Ragheb said that the signing of the agreement is an evidence on the excellent bilateral cooperation relations between the two states.
Abu al-Ragheb together with the Egyptian prime minister Atif Obeid chaired the joint committee.
On Sunday, the Egyptian minister of information Safwat al-Sharif said the Egyptian cabinet agreed a plan to export the Egyptian gas through the pipeline for 30 years starts as from the year 2003.
In January this year, each of Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon signed an agreement to transport the Egyptian gas from al-Areesh to the Lebanese port of Tripoli through under sea pipeline and then to distribute it to Jordan and Turkey through Syria.
In march this year the said four states agreed to reduce the cost of this project by canceling its pipelines routes under the Mediterranean waters and to convert this route into a land route in most of its parts.
