Khaddam vows to repel Israeli aggressions
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 6/5/2001

Lebanese President Emil Lahoud and the Syrian vice President Abdul halim Khaddam on Tuesday in Beirut discussed latest developments in the region and the brotherly relations between Syria and Lebanon.

The meeting was attended by the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri and the prime minister Rafik al-Hariri, the chief of the security and reconnaissance branch of the Syrian forces in Lebanon Gen. Ghazi Kanaan.

In a statement he made earlier in Tripoli, Lebanon, the Syrian vice President stressed that Syria will defend herself against any Israeli aggression with all its capabilities.

Following his meeting on Monday with the former Lebanese Prime minister Omar Karami, Khaddam said that Israel had made the peace process non- existent. He continued that the Israelis hindered peace negotiations and refused to comply with the resolutions of the United Nations.

He said that the aim of establishing a just and comprehensive peace is to liberate the occupied Arab lands, restore the rights of the Palestinian people and attain stability in the region, but Israel undermined the peace process based on the UN and the international Security Council's resolutions.

Replying to a question Khaddam said: "Not one Lebanese strives to turn Lebanon into a thorn in Syria's flank," but Israel together with all the international parties, who have no interest in attaining a just and comprehensive peace in the region, may strive in Lebanon and in other countries against Lebanon and Syria.

Marking the anniversary of the death of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rashid Karami, Khaddam commended the late prime minister's traits saying he was an example of Arab Lebanese nationalists who served Lebanon to avoid the Lebanese the civil war. Khaddam also met the Lebanese Prime minister and Palestinian Speaker. Later in the evening on Monday Khaddam returned back home to Damascus.
