Al-Assad confers with Czech FM
Syria-Czech Republic, Politics, 6/5/2001

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has stressed Syria's firm stances on the ME peace process based on the UN and Security Council resolutions and the Madrid conference's terms of reference.

In his meeting held on Monday with the Czech foreign minister, President al-Assad said that the biggest danger that threatens the peace process is the act of by- passing internationally- recognized terms of reference. He said that any initiatives which are proposed in this regard have to be based on these references.

The Syrian President also stressed that Europe can play an active role in the peace process due to the cultural and geographical vicinity between the European countries and those in the Middle East.

Talks between President al-Assad and the Czech minister dealt with critical circumstances through which the peace process is passing.

The president received a message from President Vatislav Havel of the Czech Republic regarding bilateral relations between the two countries.

The message also included an invitation for President al-Assad to visit the Czech republic. President Bashar accepted the invitation and promised to visit the Czech as soon as possible.

The two sides agreed on consolidating bilateral relations in the interests of the peoples of the two countries.

Earlier in the day, an official session of talks was held in Damascus on Monday between the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al- Shara and his Czech counterpart.

The talks which were attended by delegations representing the two sides dealt with the developments in the Middle East "in the light of the Israeli government hostile policy and the continuous aggression on the Arab people in the occupied Arab territories."

The two sides stressed that "the Israeli illusion of that arrogant power can not be a means for the establishment of peace and security."

They agreed on the need for the implementation of the resolutions of international legitimacy and the land for peace formula.

The two sides also discussed the latest developments in the Balkan region as well as bilateral relations and ways of promoting them further in the cultural, economic and political spheres.

The two foreign ministers, on the other hand, signed a protocol of co-operation between their foreign ministries, for the first time in the history of the relations between the two countries.

In a statement he made following his meeting with al-Shara; the Czech foreign minister described his talks in Syria as very good, useful and reflecting the mutual desire of the two countries in boosting bilateral relations.

He indicated that the talks dealt with the situation in the region and the peace process and that view points were identical on the need for the implementation of the resolutions of the international legitimacy and UN Security Council relevant resolutions and the land for peace principle for the realization of a just and comprehensive peace in the region.

On Monday, the Czech foreign minister and members of the accompanying delegation arrived in Damascus in a visit to the country.
