Egypt calls for intensive efforts to reach Mideast settlement
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 6/4/2001
The Egyptian Cabinet held a meeting Sunday under Prime Minister Atef Ebeid to discuss an array of domestic and foreign issues.
Emerging from the meeting, Minister of Information Safwat Al-Sherif said the cabinet discussed the deteriorating situation in the occupied Palestinian lands and the perilously-growing violence between the two sides.
"The cabinet reviewed Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher's report that tackled the efforts exerted by President Hosni Mubarak and his contacts with Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat and King Abdullah II of Jordan," said Sherif.
"The foreign minister referred to the contacts he made with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on coordination of efforts to contain the aggravating situation and further escalation," he added.
On the other hand, the cabinet dealt with an agreement to sell and carry natural gas from Egypt to Jordan within the memo of understanding on export of natural gas held by the Egyptian and Jordanian petroleum ministries, said Sherif.
"The agreement provides that Egyptian natural gas would be carried to Jordan as of 2003 to fulfil Jordan's needs that hit 1.100 billion cubic metres, to rise to 2 billion cubic metres in 2008", said Sherif, noting that the execution of the agreement will continue for 30 years.
"Egypt seeks gradually to reach an export capacity of 15 billion cubic metres of natural gas", said the Information minister, adding that the contracts with Jordan will offer chances to expand in exports operations.
