Football: Morocco qualifies for African Nations Cup
Morocco, Sports, 6/4/2001

Morocco on Saturday booked qualification ticket for next year's African Nations Cup finals in Mali.

A 1-1 draw in Nairobi against Kenya was enough to put Morocco in the final stages.

Kenya scored first at the 5th minute of the game, while Salah-Eddine Bassir equalized for Morocco, marking a strong comeback to the national squad after a long absence.

Three other teams, namely Algeria, Togo and Nigeria, also qualified for the final stages to join Mali, the host country, and Cameroon, winner of the 2000 Cup.

The 1-1 draw in Nairobi gives Morocco 10 points ahead of the Kenyans (6 points) who need only a draw in Tunisia on June 17 to qualify. Tunisia must win in their last match after drawing 1-1 with Gabon in Libreville on Saturday. Gabon are bottom of Group three but could still qualify if they beat Morocco on the last day and hope that the result in Tunis favors them.
