Somalia, Politics, 6/2/2001

An official at the committee in charge of organizing the referendum on the constitution " of the republic of the land of Somalia" said that the primary results of this referendum indicate a census that almost complete on adopting it.

The deputy chairman of the organizing committee Abdul Khalq Jerdah said that the first selection operations in Hergisa states that amajority of the cards voted "yes." One observer said that there are 52 No against 5900 "yes" after selecting the cards of the voting office there.

The people of the "republic of the land of Somalia" voted on Thursday in a ceremonial atmosphere to express their joy over their first constitution since 10 years. An independence which was not recognized internationally.

This referendum in this former British colony permits the independence of this republic which was declared in the first article of the constitution through direct people voting and this will pave the way for holding public referendum.

In the absence of voting lists and any statistics; number of voters is expected to be 1.3 million; according to the deputy chairman of the referendum organizing committee.

However; the international community does not recognize this referendum in this region which split in a unilateral decision from Somalia in 1991. The temporary success of this referendum is not expected to change the position of the international community from this republic. Nevertheless, the UN and the African unity Organization are both keen to find out a settlement under the state of confusion spread in Somalia. These two sides so far support the provisional national government which was formed in Makadishu following Arta conference ( Djibouti) in August; 2000.
