Tourism yielded $1.9 billion in 2000
Morocco, Economics, 6/2/2001

Tourism yielded in 2000 21 billion DH ($ 1.9 billion), says a statement of the prime minister's office released following a meeting of a ministerial commission in charge of implementing royal instructions to speed up development.

The statement said Morocco, which ambitions to attract 10 million tourists by 2010, has signed a total of 16 investment agreements both with national and foreign companies for a total value of 10 billion DH ($ 909 million). These projects are expected to generate more than 17,000 direct jobs.

These agreements are part of a strategy meant to increase the accommodation capacity and a fair distribution of hotels throughout the kingdom and diversify tourism products by promoting mountain resorts.

Participants in the meeting stressed the need to resolve problems of environment protection, sea preservation and waste treatment.
