Islamic inter-parliamentary union meets in Rabat next fall
Regional-Morocco, Politics, 5/30/2001

The Islamic inter-parliamentary union will hold its second session in Rabat next fall.

The meeting was confirmed by speaker of the Egyptian parliament, Fathi Sourour, at the end of a meeting here Tuesday evening with secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa.

Sourour told reporters the session agenda will be topped by the Israeli aggressions against the Palestinians.

He added that he had extended the AL chief an invitation to attend the Islamic parliamentary meeting.

Talks between Sourour and Moussa covered a set of Arab and Islamic issues, including the situation in the Middle East and the backing to be extended to the Palestinian cause.

The decision to convene the second session of the union in Morocco was made unanimously by the union's executive committee at its 5th session held last March in Cairo.

The session agenda will be topped by the issue of Al-Quds, Islamic countries parliaments' contribution to the reform of the general agreement on trade and tariffs (GATT) and inter-civilizations dialogue, 2001 having been decreed by the UNO as the year of dialogue between civilization.

The OIC inter-parliamentary union, set up in 1999 in Teheran, Iran, gathers the legislative assemblies of 50 Islamic countries. Its executive committee is made up of Bangladesh, Chad, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mali, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
