Arab, international interest in Cairo-Amman initiative, Mitchell's report
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 5/30/2001

"All Arab and international parties are interested in the Egyptian-Jordanian initiative and the Mitchell Commission's report," said Egypt's Presidential Political Adviser Osama El-Baz.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Baz said there is a drive to reach a common denominator between the two papers, pointing out that Israel would not be able to wriggle out of facing the situation.

Asked about the US envoy William Burns's visit to Cairo on Thursday, Baz said Egypt is interested to know from Burns Israel's stance and the outcome of his talks with the Israeli side.

On the reported security meeting on Tuesday between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, Baz said this meeting is of particular importance, because previous security meetings were held amid Israel's continued acts of violence.

"This meeting could be a test of Israel's seriousness regarding security coordination with the Palestinian Authority, as a step towards calming down the situation," he added.

Drawn on the possibility of holding a fresh Sharm El-Sheikh summit, Baz said the subject is not being raised at present, adding that if the need rose for convening a meeting there it would not be at summit level.
