Sudan underestimates the significance of unity between Mashaar; Garang

The Sudanese army has underestimated the importance of unifying the two rebel groups belonging to Rebek Mashar and John Garang, at a time Khartoum stressed that Sudan undergoes great conspiracies because of its natural resources especially oil.

The spokesman for the Sudanese army Muhammad Bashir Suleiman said the merging (unity) of Mashar and Garang groups will not live long, adding that such merger has not been surprising for the government because coordination between the two sides had been continued before Mashar had split from the ruling regime, noting that this merger falls in the course of foreign attempts to unify the two tribes of al-Dinka to which Garang belongs; and al-Nweir to which Mashar for his part belongs.

The Sudanese daily Akhbar al-Youm issued on Tuesday quoted Suleiman as saying that the southern groups for their parts " take part with the government forces to defend the oil fields in the south."

These developments have come at a time when the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is expected to arrive in Nairobi on Saturday to take part in IGAD summit dedicated for peace negotiations in southern Sudan in which Garang is supposed to take part, according to a statement by the Kenyan foreign ministry which also noted that the leaders of Kenya, Uganda, Eritrea and Ethiopia are taking part.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Sudanese national council ( parliament) Ahmad al-Taher said that Sudan has been facing a series of conspiracies because of its large natural resources especially oil.
