Baz denies possible war eruption in ME

Egyptian Presidential Political Adviser Osama al-Baz denied possible eruption of Mideast war, branding as "hollow" Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon's threats.

"These are mere hollow threats that are meant to intimidate Arabs. The Palestinians, without any weapons, cost Israel heavy losses so how can they open a new front they cannot guarantee its consequences," Baz said. "But, we have to prepare ourselves for all possibilities," he added.

Baz said there has been a glimpse of hope in the Egyptian-Jordanian initiative and Mitchell Commissions's report to have the current crisis in the Mideast come to end. This could be the case only if Israel abided by both, he noted.

As for the American administration, Baz said the U.S. began taking some active moves over the past few days as it sent Secretary of State Colin Powell in a tour in the region.

"The reason why the Bush administration is different from its predecessor in dealing with the Mideast crisis is that it gives priority to internal issues, Baz said.

But finally the administration became concerned with the Palestinian cause because it realised that its interests in the region might be in danger, he added.
