Malaysia calls OIC members to honor joint decisions
Palestine-Malaysia, Politics, 5/29/2001
Malaysia has urged fellow members in the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) to honor decisions adopted jointly and mainly the latest OIC resolution to sever ties with Israel "because of the Zionist regime's aggression against Palestine."
Malaysian news agency "BERNAMA" reports that deputy premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi lamented that in the past some OIC members chose to renege on jointly adopted resolutions. "I can still remember a similar resolution calling on OIC members to sever diplomatic ties with Israel which some OIC members could not be bothered about. "This shows OIC members are not united and for this reason others are fond of ridiculing the OIC for just watching Israel and not doing anything," Bernama quoted the official as saying.
The OIC foreign ministers extraordinary meeting attended by 56 member countries in Qatar Saturday called all member states to cut all contacts with Israel.
Abdullah said that while most OIC members do not have any ties with Israel, others did maintain active links with the Jewish state because of vested bilateral interests.
