Egyptian MPs call for Morocco's membership in African union
Egypt-Morocco, Politics, 5/29/2001
A group of Egyptian members of parliament called for Morocco's adherence to the African Union, which entered into force this week.
The MPS made the appeal during a meeting of the foreign affairs committee before the Union constituent treaty was adopted.
Head of the committee, Mustapha Faki, said it is unconceivable that Morocco remains outside the Union which is not necessarily the hereditary of the Organization of African Unity.
A founding member of the Organization of African Unity, Morocco withdrew in 1984 from the Organization to "protest the illegal admission of the puppet Sahrawi republic."
The MP who said it was abnormal that Morocco does not become member of the nascent Union had tabled a question with deputy foreign minister for African affairs, Ibrahim Al Hassan.
The deputy foreign minister said in his response that Egypt is keen on keeping good relations with Morocco and is looking forward to its membership at the Union.
