Damascus expects armed resistance in the Golan
Syria-Israel, Politics, 5/29/2001

The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Monday during his meeting in Damascus with The Egyptian Coptic Pope Shenouda III stressed the need of being patient and steadfast in order " to restore back our rights."

However; the Syrian media talked about the possibility of launching an armed struggle in the occupied Syrian Golan heights that inspire the experience of the Lebanese national resistance.

A spokesman for the Syrian presidency said that President al-Assad during the meeting which was attended by heads of Christian communities in Syria commended the national stances of Pope Shenouda and also the Syrian president talked about current conditions in the region.

The spokesman added that the Pope expressed his thanks to the Syrian president over the warm welcome he received and noted the special relations he had with the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, adding that he wants to continue with the same relations with President Bashar al-Assad.

The spokesman continued that President al- Assad also talked about current conditions in the region and stressed the need to commit to "steadfastness, patience and struggle in order to restore back our rights."

The meeting was attended by the patriarch of Antioch for the Greek-Orthodox church Zakka 1st Ewas and many other senior Christian clergies.

Meanwhile; the Syrian daily Tishreen said on Monday that an armed struggle might see light in the Golan heights which is occupied by Israel.

In its Monday's editorial, the Syrian daily added " for certain the experience of the Lebanese national resistance is a great inspiration for our people in the Golan and in occupied Palestine."

The Syrian paper continued that "Israel's defeat in south Lebanon is an experience which might be repeated in other areas."
