Senegal renews firm and active support to Moroccan territorial integrity
Morocco-Senegal, Politics, 5/28/2001

Senegalese president, Abdoulaye Wade, renewed, in a joint statement published at the end of an official visit to Senegal by King Mohammed VI (May 22-24), his country's firm and active support to Morocco's territorial integrity.

The Senegalese president also said his country supports a political situation based on Morocco's territorial integrity and national sovereignty to reach a peaceful settlement to the issue, the joint statement, released on Saturday, said.

Touching on situations of conflict in some African regions, the two African heads of state said they are concerned by the persistence of conflicts and the humanitarian disasters they entail, hailing the joint initiatives in the Mano river basin by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations Organization and called the conflicting parties to open dialogue to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis. They also praised latest peace initiatives and readiness for dialogue showed by protagonists in the Lakes region.

Regarding the situation in the middle east, King Mohammed VI- chairman of the Organization of Islamic Conference's Al-Quds Committee-- and President Abdoulaye Wade, whose country is chairing the UN committee for the exercise of the Palestinian people inalienable rights, condemned the escalation of violence against the Palestinian civilians. They also urged for an immediate end of aggression acts and for resuming negotiations on the basis of UN germane resolutions as part of the peace process and international commitments.

They also said comprehensive and lasting peace based on international legality and guaranteeing Israeli troops withdrawal from all occupied territories and the establishment of a Palestinian state with Al-Quds as its capital is an urgent necessity.

Of the international economic situation, the statement welcomed the outcome of United Nations conference on least-developed countries, held in Brussels, and called the international community to open new perspectives geared toward Africa's development.

King Mohammed VI expressed support to the Omega plan, designed by Wade, for the development of Africa and hailed his actions for peace, stability, and human rights consolidation in the continent.

The king also praised the Senegalese president's efforts to consolidate democracy in Senegal and said he supports development programs in Senegal.
