Western intelligence and a limited Israeli war
Syria-Israel, Politics, 5/26/2001
The London - based al-Muharir al-Arabi weekly quoted western intelligence sources as saying that Israel is preparing a limited war against Lebanon and does not reach the depth of the Syrian territories.
The sources said on last Wednesday ( May 23) that Suez canal area has been witnessing since last Saturday huge military reinforcement, just after less 24 hours from the use of the US- made F- 16 Israeli warplanes to bombard Palestinian positions near the Egyptian borders. A matter which made Egyptian military sources describe that as a flagrant violation to the peace treaty and a direct threat to the Egyptian national security.
British military defense information sources indicated, commenting on the Egyptian defense build up in the Suez canal to the possibility that these build up took place following the summit meeting between President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Sharm al-Sheikh last week, as western intelligence ( German, American and French) quoted information to their governments on the possibility that the Syrian President had handed his Egyptian counterpart information about Israeli preparations to strike Syria, stressing that Damascus will not stay ( tight handed) in case any aggression takes place against her. A thing, if happens, will ignite a new- Arab- Israeli war in which Egypt, despite its peace agreement with Tel Aviv, finds herself concerned to the utmost and unable to ignore taking part in its against Israel.
The paper said that Egyptian diplomatic sources in Paris denied these news and also denied to have known about the Syrian information given to Mubarak, but stressed that Sharm al- Sheikh deliberations discussed the possibility that Sharon will expand the area of his fierce attack against the Palestinians to cover Lebanon and Syria in order to divert the attention of the world from the massacres he commits against the unarmed Palestinian people.
The paper added that the British defense circles ruled out Egypt to take part at the first phase in any Israeli- Syrian war. The British sources also ruled out that a vast war will take place between Damascus and Tel Aviv and that if it takes place, it will be first limited into the Lebanese territories and might be extended to the Syrian positions scattered into the Syrian territories adjoining the border with Lebanon without exceeding these borders into the depth of the Syrian territories.
