The CIA and Arafat
Palestine-USA, Politics, 5/26/2001

A former official at the CIA has stated that experts of the US intelligence believe that the ultimate aim of the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon is to alienate the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat from the occupied Palestinian territories.

UBA quoted the said official as saying that high ranking Israeli military officials consider that Arafat is an obstacle more than as an element of security and peace.

On the other hand an official at the US administration said that several Israeli security officials, especially in the military establishment see in Arafat as the master mind for the confrontation, noting that it is clear that he does not control everything and that there are groups which work on its territories and do not follow his directives at all. " Arafat was the one who drove the train at the highest speed and then he jumped out of it," the American official said.

For his part, a former official at the terrorism fighting department at the US defense department said that Arafat used to be in the past a center for self- control and a point of contact on which differences can be discussed but all this has changed now."
