Khartoum halts its raid on the rebellions
Sudan, Politics, 5/25/2001
Sudan on Thursday announced that its forces will halt air raids against the rebellion areas in the south, while both Egypt and Libya agreed to revitalize their initiative on reconciliation in Sudan.
The Sudanese radio said quoting a statement for the government of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir that the government decided to halt the air raids in the south of Sudan and al-Nouba mountains area as from today ( Friday), May 25th.
The radio did not give a reason for this decision and gave no mention about the period to halt the air raids.
However, the government's statement in the name of the minister of information Ghazzi Salah Eddin al-Atabani said that this decision ( to halt the raid) was made " in support of the peaceful efforts made and the call of the government for a complete cease- fire " with the rebellions of the people's army for the liberation of Sudan."
The statement added that the " army preserves the right to protect its elements, the lines of supplies and to counter any aggression aiming at achieving a progress on the battle- field." The government expressed its hope that the other side will positively respond to a complete cease - fire."
