Baghdad wants strategic relations with Damascus

The Iraqi news agency said on Wednesday that Iraq and Syria have agreed, in conclusion of the meetings of the third session of their joint committee to increase the volume of trade exchange and holding joint projects in the areas of agriculture, industry and transport.

Baghdad has asserted on " strategic relations " with Damascus and explained that the two sides signed minutes of meetings which provide for " increasing trade exchange between the two countries and holding joint projects in the areas of agriculture, industry and transport."

The minutes of meeting which was signed by the Iraqi trade minister Muhammad Mahdi Saleh and the Syrian minister of the economy Muhammad al-Imadi stated to expand health, sport, youths, cultural, scientific co-operation, revitalizing the private sector and taking part in specialized exhibitions and trade markets events organized in the two countries.

The two sides agreed to unify " standard specifications of products and commodities between the two countries."

Saleh said the minutes of meeting includes " the executive solutions to eliminate all technical and administrative obstacles used to hinder the flow of commodities between the two countries. He stressed that the two countries are proceeding in confidential steps towards drawing a formula on cooperation in the area of holding joint projects, as a base to establish the common Arab market.

Al-Imadi commented that what has been achieved today marks the greater step towards Arab economic integration.

The Syrian delegation which is accompanying al-Imadi on Wednesday held a series of talks with Iraqi officials including the deputy prime minister Hikmat al-Azzawi and the Iraqi vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan.

The agency quoted Ramadan as saying to the Syrian delegation that:" Iraq considers what has been achieved as the base for a pan strategic relations that can be invested since the two countries have the strong will and desire to this end."

Ramadan called for further consolidation of such relations with Syria to be an example to be followed to serve the Arab nation and the interests of the two countries.
